Matthew is a Montana native, worked in construction until he moved to Spokane for college. Expecting to return to Montana, he was surprised to fall in love with the Inland Northwest and made the move to Spokane a permanent one. He worked his way through law school as a planner for Washington State Department of Transportation. Matthew’s background gives him a unique knowledge of construction, real estate, and highway design law.

Matthew has been lead counsel in many jury trials and arbitrations across Washington State (Federal and State Court), also on appeals through the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. Regularly consulted by and hired by fellow trial lawyers as trial counsel and to conduct jury consulting for trial work. He regularly practices throughout eastern and central Washington. His practice focuses on personal injury, construction, highway design defect, and commercial litigation.

Matt is a co-author of two books with David DeWolf, Thomson-Reuters West, Washington State Insurance Law And Litigation, Washington Practice Vol. 35 (2016 & 2017) Washington Practice is the treatise cited by the Supreme Court most often to describe Washington Law. Second, Thomson-Reuters West, Washington Construction Law Manual, Washington Practice Vo. 33 (2016-2018). He has been named one of Spokane’s Top Lawyers, 2008-2009, 2012-2017. During the years of 2010-2012, he practiced law outside of Spokane. Along with being an author he has also been a featured speaker at a number of Washington State Association of Justice events.

But more importantly, Matt is one of the luckiest people you’ll meet – married to his high school sweetheart (just celebrating their 22nd anniversary), a father of four, and a 20-year resident of the Spokane area. If he’s not in the office, he’s on a soccer field coaching local youth soccer teams or he’s in the mountains or somewhere near a river. He’s even been rumored to be an average to decent fisherman when he gets the chance to do more than untangle lines.

Going to Trial

When all efforts to negotiate have been exhausted and alternative dispute resolutions fail, we will proceed to trial. At trial, a judge or jury will examine the evidence and decide if the alleged at-fault party is liable and, if so, what damages should be appropriately awarded. The trial phase involves jury selection, opening statements, testimony and cross-examination, closing arguments, jury deliberation and verdict. If you are not satisfied with the outcome of the case, we can guide you through the appeals process.
